Big Butterfly Count 2026

🦋 Join in with this year’s nationwide Big Butterfly Count! 🦋

When: Sunday 26th July any time between 10:30am and 12:30pm. Where: visit our pop-up stall on the Chevin next to the Surprise View Car Park.

The Big Butterfly Count is a UK wide survey taking place every July that is used to help assess the health of our environment simply by counting butterflies and moths. You can join in and help us record what butterflies and moths are living around the Chevin. Even better, the free shuttle bus will be running between Otley bus station and Surprise View Car Park!

How can you get involved? It’s very simple – come to Surprise View on Sunday 26th July between 10:30am and 12:30pm (via the free shuttle bus) and visit us at our pop-up stall. Here, you can collect an ID chart and a map of the area and we’ll let you know some good places to survey. You’ll then need to find a nice spot or walk for 15 minutes and count the number of each species on the ID chart. Afterwards, you can drop off your survey counts at the stall or take a photo and send to us. We’ll then add the survey counts to the Big Butterfly Count website.

Can I do this in my own garden too? Absolutely! You can do this as many times as you want during July and August in your garden, your school, your work, or anywhere! Visit the Big Butterfly Count website to find out more info and details on how to submit your own surveys.
