Butterflies and moths

Big Butterfly Count 2023
On 6th August, 4 of us (Pauline, Damian, Brenda and Penny) took part in this years BBC. We recorded butterflies in 5 areas of the Chevin for around 15 minutes in each place as directed by the BBC. The weather was dry, overcast with sunny intervals and a light north wind.
Yorkgate Quarry near the pond:
Small White; Speckled Wood; Small Copper; Small Kipper; Peacock
Field adjacent to Wilson’s Wood: (grasses, ragwort, nettles, thistles)
Meadow Brown; Peacock; Small Kipper; Large Heath; Ringlet
Hillside to north of quarry (scrub with oak & birch, heather, knapweed):
Peacock; Red Admiral; Small Heath
Area on north hillside at Surprise View (heathland – heather, willow herb, bilberries, Rowan, Birch):
Green Veined White;Red Admiral; Wood White
Manby Field (heathland – heather & bilberries)
No butterflies recorded
